For more information about these rules Other Communities You May Enjoy. I'm looking for games that are very similar to the Dynasty Warriors series of games. Please don't suggest anything from the Koei/Warriors titles, since I already know about all of them. I'm looking for other non-Koei titles with very similar hack and slash and fast-paced gameplay, preferably one where you slaughter wave after waves of enemies with flashy attacks.
It can also have leveling up systems and other RPG elements, but I'm mostly looking for the Musou-styled gameplay. I have a PC, Wii U, and 3DS. Here is a very good example of what I'm looking for, though sadly this game is only on Sony consoles, which I don't have. I assume you already know about Hyrule Warriors, then. Not really a Wii U game, but since the system is backwards compatible, how about getting the Wii version of Sengoku Basara?
I played both DW and SB. The latter is a much more straight-forward beat 'em up than DW's emphasis on conquering parts of the map (even though SB has bits of that). There aren't many musou games on PC. Especially since that genre and platform don't cross-pollinate often with its primary Japanese audience. You'd see more Dynasty Warrior derivatives on a PlayStation system.
But as far as flashy hack n' slash games go, your best bet is Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. There aren't as many on-screen mobs, but you still get the badass action that teeter on to narm. Yep, I own Hyrule Warriors, and it was a blast. It was my first Warriors game actually. I've heard about Sengoku Basara, and it looks promising as well. The onscreen enemy count doesn't look to be as high as I'd liked, but I'll definitely give it a go.
It kinda sucks being a fan of musou-styled games and not owning a Sony console, but I'll just have to see what I can find. I'll check out Metal Gear Rising:Revengeance, but don't know if it'll be my cup of tea. A lot of (if not most) of my enjoyment from Warriors games comes from the ridiculous amounts of onscreen mobs, since it just feels so satisfying mowing them down. Closest non-Koei games: LotR: War in the North. Closest you'll get in term of combat and body count. Shadow of Mordor.
Combat is built on combos, counters and executions. If you've played the Batman Arkham games, it's nearly identical. Body count won't rise to the 1000's. DmC Devil May Cry. Compared to the Warriors game, combos are flashier, enemies are tougher. Again, not quite the 1000 body count.
Combat is different since it's dungeon crawling clickfest, but the combos and kill count is right up your alley. Diablo 3 looks more like an RPG than a third person action game, while I'm kinda looking for the latter. But thanks for the suggestion. Again, I'm looking for something that sticks relatively close to the Musou formula, but is unique enough to be its own game. For me, enemy count is pretty important because usually the more enemies there are=the faster-paced the gameplay is. Pirate Warriors 3 and Samurai Warriors 4 have the highest onscreen enemy count so far out of the Musou games, and their gameplay looks fluid and speedy, with characters literally zipping around the battlefield in SW4's case. Also, more enemies makes the battle more chaotic, which I quite enjoy.
